A growing waiting list and rapid enrollment rates highlight the
Center’s success and the neighborhood's need for services.
- In September 2004, the Sitar Center moved from 2600 square feet
to a 10,700 square foot space, which will serve more children
and offer additional classes. Specifically, the new space will:
Provide a safe environment for 300 children and youth by spring
2005(up from the current enrollment of 154) and expand further
to 500 students by 2007;
- Offer additional classes in modern dance, early childhood music,
painting, pottery, sculpture and additional private lessons;
Include an art and music library, 12 practice rooms (one devoted
entirely to percussion instruments), exhibit space, dark room,
painting and sculpture studios;
- Offer storage spaces for costumes, instruments and other equipment
and offices for staff members and faculty;
- Welcome students and parents with a reception and waiting area;
- Provide space for a rich variety of programs with existing partners
including the National Symphony, the Corcoran Museum and the Cocoran
College of Art and Design, the Washington Ballet, Washington National
Opera, and Arena Stage;
- Brighten the day of many more children, youth and families.
Anita, a guitar student, describes the new Center:
"It will be a good place for the kids who come. They'll have
a better place to learn and practice. Grown-ups will like it too.
I like being here, but I can t wait to start going to the new Center."
