Sitar Arts Center's "In The Spotlight" event, which was held on April 20th, was featured in the May issue of The Georgetowner. The special fundraiser was in support of Sitar's arts education programs for underserved youth in Washington, DC. Related Links: Read the Article Wednesday, May 13
Sitar was recently named a semifinalist for the 2009 Coming Up Taller Award, distinguishing the Center as one of the premier afterschool arts and humanities organizations serving youth in the nation. This is the second time Sitar has received this distinction, previously named a Coming Up Taller Award semifinalist in 2006. Sitar's band students performed in a program hosted by the Center for American Progress on the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage. The group was accompanied by Josh and Cora Dunham, the husband & wife rhythm section for Grammy award winner Prince. Related Links: Read the Article
Monday, April 20
Six Sitar Arts Center playwriting students performed their original 10-minute play “A Show of Courage” as part of Arena Stage’s Student Playwrights Showcase held at THEARC in Washington, DC on April 20th. Part two of the year-long Student Playwrights Project, the Showcase is held under the direction of Arena Stage’s Community Engagement Division and features the work of middle and high school student groups participating in the Project. Friday, February 20th
Sitar students Forrest Penrod and Israel Nunez were recently honored as playwrights. Forrest became a second time winner of Arena Stage's "Ten Minute Student Playwright Competition, and Israel was honored through his work with Young Playwright's Theater. Both will have their plays performed in professional DC theaters this spring. Related Links: Read the Article

Monday, December 15th
NBC4 selected Sitar Arts Center to be a part of its 2008 “12 Days of Giving” series. On Monday, December 15th, the Center was featured during the midday newscast from 11am-12pm and the afternoon program from 4pm-5pm. Sitar community members spoke about the Center and its mission, as well as hosted an on-air phone bank. Please tune in to support Sitar Arts Center and its students this holiday! Monday, August 4th
Sitar Arts Center recently received a generous $20,000 grant from the NBC Universal Foundation in support of the Arts for Teens Initiative. Such a significant grant will enable the Center to increase enrollment and retention of adolescent students and provide them with outlets to both develop artistic skills and to apply them to potential career opportunities. Featuring the Center’s Pop’n’Lock class, which is offered in partnership with CityDance Ensemble, the segment highlights the healthy impact that performing arts and physical activity can have on a young person’s life.
