The full-scale summer production of “The Wiz," directed by A. Lorraine Robinson, opens at The Patricia M. Sitar Center for the Arts August 12-14 with a talented 40-member cast of inner city youth and a dynamic mother-daughter combo in the roles of Auntie Em and Dorothy.

With favorites such as Home and Ease on Down the Road, “The Wiz” is a thrilling and funky edition of the classic story of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

The Sitar Center’s production includes almost all of the multidisciplinary art forms taught at the Sitar Center such as Capoeira artists as Winged Monkeys, young ballet dancers as The Tornado, belly dancers as Poppies, and aspiring yogis as The Yellow Brick Road. Sitar Center musicians comprise the pit band, visual art students completed the set design, and kids in the Fashion Design class created the costumes.

The Patricia M. Sitar Center for the Arts provides arts instruction in music, dance, visual art, creative writing, and drama to low-income youth and families in Washington, D.C. Programs are enhanced by partnerships with many of Washington’s finest arts organizations including The Washington Ballet, Washington National Opera, National Symphony Orchestra, Corcoran Museum and College of Art and Design, Levine School of Music, Arena Stage, and CityDance Ensemble. “The Wiz” is the first full-length musical to be staged at the Sitar Center.
