Synopsis:
The Charles family, the heart of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play The Piano Lesson, live in 1930-era Pittsburgh in a world hardly built for them. When the Charles siblings inherit a piano once traded for an enslaved ancestor, the family is faced with a beautiful object belying an ugly truth. Yet, the Charles’ truths are timeless: family values, racial divisiveness, and slavery remain as real and resonant as ever.
Through this exclusive run of The Piano Lesson, Sitar alumni, current students, and emerging theater professionals are stepping out to show their talents, showcase the triumph of the human spirit, and express the urgency of equality. This play won’t be all together playful (though there are moments of levity and wit), but it will grip you.
Rated PG: some mature language.
