During the summer, Sitar offers students of all ages a fun, educational, productive and safe way to spend their summers and continue their exploration of the arts in a more intensive way. Students can participate in four different, exciting options depending on their interests and age levels throughout the summer.
At Camp Sitar’s visual and performing arts camp, choose to paint a portrait, dance, sculpt, play the guitar, write a comic book, design a t-shirt or all of the above. Students can attend three two-week sessions daily from 1:00 pm–4:00 pm for students in grades 1-7 to explore a variety of visual and performing arts including dance, music, drama, visual arts, creative writing and graphic arts. Students have the opportunity each session to choose classes that match their interests.
NEW FOR 2013! Sitar Arts Center is partnering with Washington Performing Arts Society to pilot a morning camp program from 9:00 am - 12:00 noon during the first session of Camp Sitar (June 24 - July 5). Students in grades K-3 can choose to take WPAS Playful Rhythms @Sitar! In addition, students in grades 4-7 can participate during this special morning session in Sitar's Visual and Performing Arts Camp.
In addition to classes, students take trips to cultural institutions like The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Meridian International Center, The Mexican Cultural Institute, Imagination Stage and The National Museum of the American Indian and participate in fun activities like field day, student performances, trips to the zoo, visits to the park and an end-of-camp carnival.
For students who like to sing, dance, and act, Camp Sitar’s summer musical provides the opportunity to put on an exciting, Broadway-style musical under professional direction and design. Students experience all aspects of mounting a full length musical from auditioning to rehearsal to final performance. Past productions have included Beauty and the Beast, Willy Wonka, Jr., You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, Hello, Dolly, Bye Bye Birdie and Guys and Dolls!
The cast of the musical attends Camp Sitar from 1:00 pm–4:00 daily for six weeks. Students must audition to be part of the musical and have to be between the ages of 10-18 and available for the entire six-week session, including the four final performances.
Teen Arts Intensive
The Teen Visual and Performing Arts Intensive offers a higher level of classes in graphic design, music production, photography, fashion, dance and more. Students in grades 8-12 choose from intensive classes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4:00 pm–6:00 pm. Teens can opt to participate in the Teen Intensive and the summer musical.
Instrumental Music Academy
Students who are taking an individual music lesson during the spring semester may continue with their private lessons during the summer between 4:00 and 6:00 pm. Students must register for the entire 6-week summer session. Students must continue with their current instrument and teacher. Availability is not guaranteed for all students and is dependent on the teacher.
Aftercare is available for camp students ages twelve and under, Monday through Friday from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration for aftercare is limited and required for each two week session. There is an additional fee for each session of aftercare.
